Star Anise

Star Anises are the seeds of medium-sized evergreen trees known as Illicium Verum. Their history can be dated as far back as 100 B.C. where the seeds were and are currently used as the key ingredient in the Chinese five-spice mix. In Western culture, they are frequently applied in baking, liquor production and cooking to produce exceptional aroma profile. Furthermore, Star Anises also carry medicinal qualities. The taste profile of Star Anises is similar to one of black liquorice, this is due to a strong presence of (E)-anethole substance inside the seed.

Star Anises are native to North-eastern Vietnam, Southwestern China and can also be found elsewhere in the Philippines and Jamaica. In Vietnam, Star Anises can be found distributed across regional areas of Lang Son, Cao Bang, Bac Thai and Quang Ninh. Their harvesting schedule is between July to September and November to December each year.
